“It wasn’t pretty like the movies
It was ugly, like what they all did to me
And they did to me what I wouldn’t do to anyone
You know that’s for sure”
It’s rare you get new music by one of your favorite newer artist twice in one year but that’s the case with Ethel Cain giving us what will be two very different projects this year.
The first one, The “Perverts” EP came at the beginning of the year and was her foray into Drone music. It was a meditative accompaniment to my foray into therapy so while it wouldn’t be my intro to the uninitiated it left a mark on me.
This song is the first official release for her upcoming album, “Willoughby Tucker, I’ll Always Love You”, which seems to be an official continuation of her genre blending and storytelling being a prequel to the “Preachers Daughter” album and revealing more in the story of Ethel Cain.
This song feels more familiar but still new in that it’s got more Country, notes of Bluegrass and a rustic and earthy feel. The 8 minutes breezes by with the layered instrumentation and the harmonious vocals of Ethel. This, at least where I live is an artist I’ll share in vain, outside of my love for her art but I would be remiss not to share regardless. One should be so lucky to have artist like this to score their lives whether it be scoring their highlights but especially scoring their lows with a embrace of sonic comfort like this! <3

Great write up!
Great post Soot and Stars!
